Build nesting boxes for wildlife!

Learn how to construct wildlife boxes for urban critters!

Did you know? Micro-bat nesting box: Over 20 bats can live in one tube and each bat will eat up to 3000 mosquitoes per night!

Despite the urban location, you’d be surprised at the abundance of wildlife located in and around the suburbs of Melbourne. Many of these wildlife require hollows for shelter, but a lack of hollows in the urban environment make it a highly competitive place to live.

In this activity you will be supporting our Youth Wildlife Ambassador Gio Fitzpatrick to construct nestboxes for urban wildlife including birds, possums and bats. At age 10, Gio identified the need for alternative homes for displaced wildlife that have lost their tree-hollow nests, and has spent the last decade custom-designing, building and installing nestboxes for the community.

You will be tutored in nestbox construction before having a go at constructing your very own nestbox or two. Completed nestboxes will be distributed to private landholders and schools in the local area.

Your contribution will create meaningful change to urban habitat values and you’ll also learn a new skill!
