Penguin Friendly Events
The City of Port Phillip and Port Phillip EcoCentre are working with 10 local community events to create zero litter and zero-waste events. These event hosts are inspired to protect the local colony of 1300 Little Penguins from harmful litter entanglements when rubbish reaches St Kilda breakwater by wind or rain.
We'll combine pre-event planning and education, employ volunteers and Wash Against Waste trailers during events, and conduct litter audits after selected events to check how well we're doing. Students, volunteers and event hosts are sharing their learnings to inform each other and support future Penguin Friendly events. St Kilda Primary and Albert Park Primary are sharing curriculum and using kids-teaching-kids to be zero-litter penguin protection ambassadors their whole school communities.
Join our community in stopping litter at its source! And pick up a Penguin Panic board game. Our 2017 Penguin Friendly events include:
- Albert Park Primary School Fete
- Get Striped! Diversity Market at St Kilda Primary School
- Port Melbourne Community Carnival
- Piers Festival
- School Sustainability Festival
- and many more across the suburbs of City of Port Phillip
This project is funded through a Victorian Litter Innovation grant, Albert Park Primary School, St Kilda Primary School, and City of Port Phillip.
