The Thomson scheme was built
in several stages.
In the early 1970s many kilometres of tunnel were drilled and blasted
through the rock of the Dividing Range to allow water from the Thomson
River to flow into the Upper Yarra Reservoir (total available capacity
200,000 megalitres);

Water from the Thompson and Upper Yarra is distributed to the metropolitan
area via Silvan.
In an average year, metropolitan Melbourne
consumes around 500 gigalitres of water.
