Melbourne's Water

Metro Melbourne has total water storage capacity of 1,787,000 megalitres. More information is available from Melbourne Water.

Melbourne's water is stored in 14 major reservoirs, with the Thomson (total available capacity 1.068,000 megalitres) and Upper Yarra reservoirs providing 60 per cent of the city's supply; Thomson reservoir fact sheet

The Thomson scheme was built in several stages.

In the early 1970s many kilometres of tunnel were drilled and blasted through the rock of the Dividing Range to allow water from the Thomson River to flow into the Upper Yarra Reservoir (total available capacity 200,000 megalitres); Upper Yarra Reservoir fact sheet

Water from the Thompson and Upper Yarra is distributed to the metropolitan area via Silvan.

In an average year, metropolitan Melbourne consumes around 500 gigalitres of water.
