Every time our EcoCentre marine ecologist Matt sticks his head in the bay and ocean he sees something exciting that makes getting wet worthwhile! Think spider crabs, dolphins, weedy seadragons, stingrays…but also tiny creatures not so readily seen or appreciated. Having explored the underwater world from the Great Barrier Reef to Antarctica, Matt realised that the rockpools and shallow waters of his local neighbourhood are incredibly unique! Victoria's marine systems comprise a wide array of habitats fed by rich ocean currents and basking under seasonal conditions that produce huge volumes of life in a vast number of species.
This session focuses on the species richness and high endemism of our local marine biodiversity, examining the drivers behind our unique assemblages and the processes sustaining them. This leads into a discussion of the threats to our waters and ways you can help look after them.
Alive Outside is a free program for youth aged 12-25 who live, work, play, or study in the City of Port Phillip.
This session will be delivered online through Zoom.
