We made the tough choice to cancel as the group numbers were a bit too low for a safe street clean — instead we invite you to join us in teaming up with EcoCentre friends leading local clean ups:

April from the EcoCentre is hosting a clean-up in South Melbourne, working in small teams for litter removal along the street, as well as recording what we find to contribute to local, state and national databases that inform reduction plans for the most common items.
We’re taking action in one of Melbourne’s busiest high-traffic business districts – Clarendon Street, South Melbourne – which sits in close proximity to Port Phillip Bay. Litter from this urban area can easily make its way into our waterways, impacting marine life and coastal ecosystems.
After the clean-up, we will sort and record the litter into the Victorian Litter Watch App and the Clean Up Australia database, helping to inform environmental strategies at both local and state levels.
We will provide: buckets, bags, tongs, gloves, clip boards, hand sanitiser and safety equipment for picking up sharps
Be prepared: We’ll start the morning with a quick activity briefing before heading out.
No prior experience is needed. Please dress for the day’s weather and choose comfortable enclosed footwear. BYO drink bottle. We will have safety wear but feel free to BYO gloves if you have them.
Keeping it safe: This activity involves approximately 2 hours of walking in a loop on flat paved surfaces, i.e. the fantastic footpaths of South Melbourne! Cleaning up can involve a lot of bending over, however we also have roles such as holding the clipboard to record data. Children are welcome but must be under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. We will be mindful of active trading zones and cars on a busy weekend morning. This is an outdoor activity that involves weather exposure.
Clean-up Area: A short strip along Clarendon Street, South Melbourne
What to Bring:
• SunSmart clothing (hat, sunscreen)
• Comfortable enclosed footwear
• A reusable water bottle
• (Optional) Bringing your own garden gloves is encouraged
