Free Online Event! Hunting the Real Moby Dick: The Killer Sperm Whales of Australia
(Ben Francischelli, Palaeontologist)
EcoCentre palaeontologist Ben Francischelli is on the hunt for the biggest predators of all time in Melbourne, Australia. Hidden under the waves of Port Phillip Bay, the remains of the real Moby Dick are slowly being uncovered.
Killer Sperm Whales were unlike their modern counterparts. With interlocking teeth and some of the strongest bite forces ever recorded in the animal kingdom, Ben is leading underwater expeditions with citizen scientists to find the last-ever refuge of these "great white whales".
In this online talk, Ben will be giving a complete overview of all sperm whales. From their bizarre anatomy, to the largest of the Killer Sperm Whales, Livyatan of Moby Dick fame, this is a story millions of years in the making.
