About The Program

The City of Port Phillip and Port Phillip EcoCentre worked with 10 local community events to identify the key actions for a school or community event to reduce their litter and waste with the goal to being zero-waste. This project emotionally connected people to St Kilda’s local colony of 1,300 Little Penguins and inspired participants to reduce harmful litter entanglements when rubbish reaches St Kilda breakwater by wind or rain.

The project combined pre-event planning and education, employed volunteers and the Wash Against Waste trailer during events, and conducted litter audits. Thank you to St Kilda Primary School and Albert Park Primary School for participating in this project and for openly sharing the outcomes from their school fetes.

The 2017 Penguin Friendly events included:
– Albert Park Primary School Fete
– Get Striped! Diversity Market at St Kilda Primary School
– Port Melbourne Community Carnival
– Piers Festival
– School Sustainability Festival
and many more across the suburbs of City of Port Phillip

This project was funded through a Victorian Litter Innovation grant, Albert Park Primary School, St Kilda Primary School, and City of Port Phillip.

"I loved spending time outdoors with the team and helping a great cause, plus learning more about our environment and penguins."

The EcoCentre acknowledges the Kulin Nations, including the Yalukut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung language group, traditional owners of the land on which we are located.

We pay respects to their Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Elder members of our multicultural community.
