ResourceSmart Schools

Overview

The EcoCentre supports 19 local schools embarking on their ResourceSmart Schools journey towards five-star sustainability certification in their management of water, energy, waste and biodiversity. Participating schools often achieve up to a 50% reduction in energy usage and waste generation through education and climate action led by teachers, students and the parent community. We are proud that three of our schools were finalists in the Victorian Government’s ResourceSmart Awards 2020 (St Columba’s Primary School, Melbourne Girl’ College, and St Louis de Montfort’s in Aspendale).

Using the Victorian ResourceSmart Schools framework, our experienced team will help connect you to other local schools, resources and expertise via:

The journey to becoming a 5 Star Sustainable School involves progression through a five-module framework, concluding with demonstrated leadership among the school community.

Our team can work with your sustainability leaders to explore methods for measuring and auditing biodiversity, energy, waste and water. We can also help with the EcoFootprint (within the Core module) and combine creative and mathematical methods for gathering data and creating action plans!

“We learned so much today! I loved everything… The interactive environment, the guest speaker who was experienced in the field, the welcoming atmosphere…”

With the goal of securing carbon neutrality, Albert Park Primary School (APPS) has actively made it a priority to reduce their carbon footprint. The school noticed that their energy usage was moderately high during the weekends and holidays. In response to investigations, it was decided to take action by shutting down all devices over the last 2 weekends of the term, leading into the summer holidays.
